Dirtying the Paper Delicately
Stephen Farthing, 2006
This is the inaugural lecture of Professor Stephen Farthing, Rootstein Hopkins Professor of Drawing at UAL, which took place in April 2006.
The title comes from an expression used by John Ruskin to describe the first marks on paper that measure out a drawing internally is to ‘dirty the paper delicately’. Stephen goes on to link this to an idea that Brice Marden said about drawing: ‘the hand touches more delicately in drawing. There is less between the hand and the image than in any other media.’
